Our IBM Lotus Domino Development servers are also often referred to as "shared servers" or "virtual servers." You share the Domino server with up to 30 other customers(1)) and your users are certified in the "/Prominic" organization. You do not have access to the Domino Directory and you have no administrative rights in the server document. You can run restricted agents, but unrestricted agents are never allowed due to security concerns. Development packages are the most economical, but also offer you the least direct control over your environment.
Development servers are not designed for production applications and should only be used for design and testing(2). We realize that some customers will choose to run their production applications and websites on a shared server due to the cost, and they will be fairly successful in doing this. Customers will, however, find that our Production (Partitioned) and Dedicated environments have much better stability, reliability and performance.
(1) Prominic.NET places a maximum of 30 active customers on each of our Development (Shared) servers. Contrast this with some of our competitors who pack as many customers as possible on their servers, and you'll see why Prominic has a reputation for quality and reliable service!
(2) A "shared" or "virtual" server can never be much more than a development platform due to the nature of the environment , and this is the same for any provider you look at. Your data is on a server shared among many other customers who are competing for the same computing resources that you are. We take security seriously in our shared server environment, so some potentially dangerous functions are restricted or even completely unavailable. Also keep in mind that a bug in someone else's code could cause a Development server to crash, bringing down the applications and website for all other customers on the server. Our management and monitoring system will bring any troubled server back online in a very short time, but a production-grade application deserves a stable production environment.
On a Domino Production (Partitioned) server you have your own instance of the Domino server software, but you are on a physical server that has other instances running. You have your own unique Notes domain and your users are certified in an organizational unit of your choosing (i.e. "/YourCompany"). You have direct access to the Domino Directory as well as full administrative control over most settings in your server document. Your team can handle the Domino server administration, or you can add bundled support to your package and engage our support engineers for help. Regardless of your administration choice, Prominic.NET will handle the initial configuration and provide you with some guidelines on different server document settings. Unlike the Domino Development (Shared) platform, you can run both restricted and unrestricted agents. From a purely Domino standpoint, a partitioned production server is just like having a completely dedicated Domino server—you simply share the hardware with a limited number of other customers. The only restrictions are that you do not have direct access to the base operating system and you cannot install 3rd-party programs on the server.
Domino Production (Partitioned) servers are entry level environments for production level applications and websites. They are designed for applications that have completed development and testing and are ready for full-time use. These partitioned servers offer superior uptime, reliability and performance when compared to a Domino Development (Shared) server. The next step up is our Domino Dedicated server.
IBM Lotus Domino Dedicated servers are Prominic.NET's premium production-level offering. Performance, reliability and security are all maximized, making a dedicated production server the obvious choice for organizations serious about protecting their application or website investment. A Dedicated production server is functionally similar to a Domino Production (Partitioned) server, but you do not share any hardware with other customers. You have direct access to the base operating system and full control over your server 24/7. Furthermore, you can install supplementary 3rd-party programs like Tomcat JSP, Apache, MySQL, ColdFusion and others, provided you have the licenses to do so.
